Cockroaches (Blattaria) are a widespread insect pest. Four of the 4,500 species of cockroach represent the bulk of the infestations: the American cockroach, German cockroach, Asian cockroach and the Oriental cockroach. Apart from the Asian cockroach, they generally avoid light and emerge after dark. They like warmth and moisture, so are frequently found near heaters, air-conditioners or plumbing.
The Roach's reputation as one of the hardiest creatures on the planet is well deserved. Unfortunately, this means that attempts to completely eliminate cockroaches from the home are likely to fail. Instead, a long-term management system should be put in place. See Cockroach Control.
